Taking advantage of the reality of by-election campaign as the 'season for giving', PAS vice president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has reminded people in Kerdau and Merlimau that the sky is the limit.
Tuan Ibrahim joked that the voters there could even as that a river be built in their areas and it would be fulfilled by the Barisan Nasional government.
“Just ask for anything. In this season, if you ask for a river, they will build it. If you want crooked roads to be straightened, they will do it,” he said in a meet-the-people event here.
The Pahang PAS commissioner however recalled the Sanggang by-election, an area neighbouring Kerdau, in 2000, which saw the BN candidate defeating PAS's Hishamudin Yahya.
“Before you are taken in by their promises, remember the last Sanggang by-election in Temerloh. Hundreds of lorries were brought into the kampung carrying rocks to fix the roads. In the end, after the by-election, the rocks remained rocks," he said.
“This time, the same people will be coming to Kerdau. Don't be cheated the second time,” he added.
Tuan Ibrahim said prime minister Najib Razak was worried about support for the BN in Pahang, his homestate, despite winning big in Pekan in 2008.
“Although the Prime Minister won big during 2008 general election, the hike in number of voters in Pekan shows that the prime minister himself is worried.
"That’s why the Prime Minister keeps repeating that Egypt is not the same as Malaysia. In Malaysia, the people will suffer first, not Egypt,” he added.
'Orange Book' influence
He said Pakatan Rakyat’s first 100-day reforms spelt out in its 'Orange Book' was now most feared by BN.
“When we offered Pakatan Rakyat’s 100-day programmes, Prime Minister has repeatedly said the country would go bankrupt if these were implemented."
"But, recently, more than 800 headmasters had their salaries raised," he said, referring to PR's promise to raise teachers' allowances, earlier criticised by BN leaders.
Tuan Ibrahim said PR had also promised to abolish tolls, and this had been partially emulated by Najib recently when he announced reduction of tolls at the New Pantai Expressway in Jalan Kelang Lama.
The Kerdau by-election will be held simultaneously with the Merlimau by-election in Malacca on March 6. Nomination has been set this Saturday.
