Prof Aziz gets a bullet in the mail

PETALING JAYA: International Islamic University (UIA) professor Abdul Aziz Bari got a shock of his life when he received a death threat and a live bullet in the mail this morning.
Aziz told reporters that he thought the envelope, delievered to his Bandar Baru Selayang residence at around 11:45am, was a joke.
“I didn’t expect this, I thought it was a kind of joke or something,” he said.
According to Aziz, the envelope came with a note saying: “Jangan kurang ajar dengan Sultan, maut nanti” (Don’t be rude with the Sultan, if not you’ll die).
The threat was referring to Aziz’s Oct 12 article in Malaysiakini regarding the Sultan of Selangor Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

In the article, the UIA don said that the Sedition Act 1948 did not criminalise anyone for making comments on a ruler’s decree.
Aziz made these comments after His Majesty absolved the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (JAIS) of any wrongdoing in its Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) raid in August.

Shortly after, UIA suspended him and served him with a show-cause letter. The suspension was lifted after hundreds of students gathered in protest against the decision.
This had not stopped unversity students from threatening to take to the streets over the UIA professor’s predicament.
Speaking on the threat itself, Aziz said he would file a police report on the matter tomorrow as he was attending a function in the northern part of the country.
He told FMT that he left for this event soon after receiving the threat.
Aziz also advised Malaysians to remain calm.
“I want to tell people to keep calm and keep cool…(It appears that) the right-wingers masquerading as nationalists and moralists are going to this extent trying to harp this (issue) up,” he said.
