MESSAGE FROM ASEAN PARLIAMENTARY FRIENDSHIP GROUP OF THE GERMAN BUNDESTAG

ASEAN Parliamentary Friendship Group calls for free and fair elections in Malaysia
ASEAN Parliamentary Friendship Group calls for free and fair elections in Malaysia.

In advance of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Malaysia on 5 May, Dr Thomas Gambke, Chairman of the ASEAN Parliamentary Friendship Group of the German Bundestag, has made the following statement on behalf of the members of the group:

On 5 May, parliamentary elections are taking place in Malaysia. We call on all those involved to ensure free and fair elections in Malaysia. This includes a fair election campaign in which all parties are able to campaign for votes without impediment. Manipulation of the electorate through intimidation, vote-buying or attempts to hinder the candidates have no place in a democratic election. Electoral observers must be able to carry out their work unimpeded.

For the first time since Malaysia's independence in 1957, polls predict that there is a real chance of a change of government. This possible change of power should not create concern, since it is a sign of a democracy which is developing.
